Semi_transparent_deck_stainIt is true that extensive preparation, diligent maintenance and appropriate application techniques contribute to a long-lasting finish, but selecting quality products is also important. Below are the things you need to consider when choosing your deck stain as discussed during summer painting event.

Pigment Density

The first defense against UV damage is a densely pigmented stain. You can choose from the four types of formulas:  semi-solid stains, solid deck stains, transparent stains and semi-transparent stains. Note that the more opaque a stain is, the better it will hold up.

Solid color deck stains  usually have an opaque, paint-like finish. Depending on the manufacturer, flat and satin options are available. Also, there are different colors to choose from, you can even have custom colors mixed specially for you. However, they are not the same as paint. They are designed to penetrate the wood and not just rest on the surface.

Semi-solid deck stains are currently available from a few manufacturers. Semi-solid stains are pigmented densely enough to last for about three years under normal conditions. If a single coat is applied, it will allow some texture and grain to show through but a second coat will produce an opaque finish similar to those produced by a color stain.

Semi-transparent stains are a step up from transparent stains. Though they allow the texture and grain to show through, they make the the wood darker  than transparent stains do. A single coat can last about two years, although two coats can extend your stain’s lifespan, but not by much.

Transparent deck stains contain the least pigment. These deck stains allow the grain and texture of the wood to remain visible. They are the least desirable option from a maintenance standpoint because they require yearly refinishing.

Water or Oil?

Because these two types of stain perform very differently, it is important to decide whether to use a water based or oil based stain.

Water based stains are usually more easier to clean up and they release fewer VOCs.

Water-based stains usually need to be redone more frequently and they are more likely to crack and peel as they don’t penetrate the wood deeply, unlike oil based stains.

Oil based stains, however, penetrate deeper into the wood and are less likely to crack and peel because all wood contains resins which are soluble when exposed to oil-based formulas.

Also, oil-based stains last longer, typically 2-4 years. They require less prep work before a new finish can be applied. Therefore overall, they are lower maintenance than water-based stains.

This article is inspired by my friends’ story, on what happened within him and a client, he used to be one of the garage door repair service provider in the neighborhood before he retired.

For a garage that is attached to your home, making a choice about its roofing material is not a difficult task. But if it is completely detached from your house, you need to decide about the type of roofing material to use. Though you can use the  same material as your home for roofing, it is not the only option that you have.

These are some advantages and disadvantages of each kind of roofing that you can use for your detached garage.

1. For Curb Appeal

Though it might not be included in the structure of your home, if your detached garage can be seen from the street, then it will be viewed as an extension of your whole house, especially if your garage has a space above it for an office or an apartment. In cases like this, your garage becomes a kind of second building of your entire property. Therefore, to maximize the curb appeal, it will be sensible to use the roofing material as that of your house.

2. For Durability

Garages are not just used for housing cars. As a matter of fact, they can also be used for different purposes such as a home-based businesses, craft room, playrooms, a gym and so on. Therefore, if your plan is to store hazardous materials or those that gives off fumes in your garage, then it is better to consider non-flammable roofs. It will be sensible to use a durable metal roofing that has a little style and color. This will prevent leakages when it rains while also adding charm and style to your place.

3. For a Low Slope Garage

The sole benefits of a detached garage is because it can lower the building costs significantly. Sometimes, this leads to a garage with a low pitch or low slope roof. Garages like this are not expensive to construct but you can only make use of one type of roofing which is rolled roofing. This type of roofing is made up of the same material from which asphalt shingles are made, with the exception of the fact that it is less attractive, less expensive and it is less durable against leaks and hail.

Roofs were originally designed to protect the commodities from Sun and rain damage, but nowadays, you can fulfill the same purpose while at the same time, taking the look of the entire building to a whole new level.

There are several different shapes and sizes of corrugated metal. The design on your roof will determine the type to choose. Today a St. Charles Basement Finishing expert will help us understand some types. These are some of the commonly used sizes and shapes of corrugated roofing materials.

Type B Wide Rib

The shape of Wide Ribe or Type B corrugated metal is a strong choice because it has the capacity to carry load. This is why it is the most widely chosen style for industrial metal roofing. It can be made of galvanized steel, aluminum, painted steel or stainless steel. 36″ is the standard sheet width. It is especially good in cases where rigid insulation is needed on top of the roof deck because the wide rib of type B allows for a narrow top opening. Always remember to allow for overlaps at the support points when figuring out coverage for type B wide rib.

Type F Intermediate Rib

This is known as an Intermediate Rib due to its spacing that is not as wide as that of Type B. Intermediate rib is an older type of corrugated metal but it’s still used in specific applications. It is particularly serviceable for roofs that needs nest with an existing Type F roof. This type can also be found in painted or galvanized steel, aluminum or stainless steel and the width of a standard sheet is 36″.

Type F corrugated metal

2 1/2″ Rib or type F is much more advanced than the older type of 24GA 2 1/2 inches Corrugated metal. Type F has an improved carrying capabilities than the older type. It is often found in 30″ sheets.

Also known as Thermal wall panels, they are firm and have a great load-carrying capability. It is best used when you are not using rigid insulation. N DECK can be found in aluminum, stainless steel, fiberglass and coated steel varieties. They are in wide flute profile and this makes it as attractive as a siding product for a roofing panel.

They are readily available and easily recognizable but they are mostly used for siding. Thermal wall corrugated is not usually recommended for roofing applications.

R panel has a wide and deep profile that is very strong. It can be found as R panels in both roofing and siding applications.

how to clean a silk rug at home

If you have ever hired a company for carpet cleaning in St. Charles, MO, you will know that the process they implement when cleaning a silk rug is usually different because of the nature of the material.

Silk is a natural protein fiber which is obtained when silkworm larvae form cocoons and it is composed mainly of fibroin. Though silk is one of the strongest natural fibers, it will lose up to 20 percent of its strength if it gets wet. It is known for its ability to refract light and can be used to create shimmering rugs. Because abrasive cleanings agents, steam and hot water cleaning can damage silk fibers, it is recommended that professional cleaning be used for all silk rugs. You can make use of these tips to clean silk rugs at home.

To remove dust and debris from silk rugs

1. Make sure you vacuum the silk rug regularly. A brush-less suction head should be used to vacuum silk rugs because roller or beater brushes may pull out fibers and reduce the pile, thereby, damaging the rug.

2. Silk rugs should be gently swept with a broom in order to avoid damaging the fibers.

3. Shake the rug. To remove dust and debris, shake the rug off outside. This  will also help air out the rug to remove any odors.

Remove Stains from Silk Rugs

1. Stains should be cleaned immediately before they set in and get attached to the silk fibers.

2. Solid spills should be removed. Scoop solid debris from the rug gently by using a spoon. But take care not to scrape the fibers of the rug because scraping motion can  cause the silk fibers to tear.

3. If liquid spills on the silk rug, gently press a clean, white cloth to the affected areas so as to absorb as much liquid as possible.

4. To remove color from stains, pour club soda onto a clean cloth and then blot the stain. With a dry cloth, absorb any excess club soda and allow the area to air dry. Don’t use heat like a hair dryer to dry the area because it may damage the silk rug.

5. Use a mixture of white vinegar and water in equal parts to also remove stains. Pour the vinegar and water solution on a clean cloth and then use the cloth to blot the stain. With a dry cloth, absorb the excess solution and then allow the area to air dry.

To remove odors from silk rugs

1. Use baking soda to remove odors from silk rugs because it helps in removing odors from different surfaces, including textiles. To get rid of the odor, sprinkle baking soda on the rug, allow it to absorb for about an hour and then use a brush-less suction head of a vacuum cleaner to vacuum the rug.

2. You can also use vinegar and water solution to set rid of odors from silk rugs. Because of the slight acidity of vinegar, it is effective in removing odors and germs.

Windows usually bring warmth and light, beautify inside and out, provide views and add great value to your home. Windows can also let in intruders and elements that can put your home at risk. That is why windows must be considered a vital investment. Mostly, the cost of windows depends on the type, materials used, dimensions, the complexity of the installation, security features and the number of windows needed. Here are some major things to consider when looking to buy some replacement windows.

1. Number of Windows

Ideally, the more windows that needs to be installed, the more expensive the installation price will be. But professionals will charge less per window if several windows are installed at the same time. So, if you are contemplating replacing two windows, it will make sense to talk to your professional installer about the cost of installing multiple windows at one time. This may save you money eventually.

2. Window Sizes

Windows usually have different dimensions depending on where they are needed. Typically, living rooms have larger picture windows hung in multiples ranging from 3×4 inhes to 6×6 inches. A standard bathroom window is a bit smaller, it ranges from 2×1.5′ to 2×3′. Most window manufacturers will be able to customize windows to any dimensions, though you may be asked to pay more for odd sizes.

3. Window Sash Materials

In the case of vinyl windows, they are inexpensive and they need little or no maintenance. They are also very durable and changes in humidity will not cause them to shrink or swell. Vinyl window manufacturers usually stand behind their products with strong warranties but the disadvantage of vinyl windows is that they are not as attractive or sturdy as wood. On the other hand, wood frames cost more and also require much more maintenance. If you fail to repaint and finish wooden window frames, they will become susceptible to the elements. Though all that money and work can be worth it because of the classic and authentic architectural appeal of wood. That is why some historical neighborhoods always have covenants which requires that windows be framed with wood.

4. Window Panes

You can save a considerable amount of money on your utility bills and also make your home more comfortable with new windows. Windows are mostly rated by the U-factor. If the U-factor is low, the more energy efficient and the higher the initial cost. You will pay more for a double-pane window, but over time, they will pay for themselves.

Replacing existing windows is  usually cheaper than cutting walls for new ones. Consider talking to your contractor and a security firm about ways to make your windows safe from burglars. Note that windows above the first floor are likely to be more expensive to install because of access issues.
